Summer at Frederiksborg

28/06 2025 - 10/08 2025

Castle, art, nature and architecture - all in one place!

Frederiksborg is the largest and most magnificent Renaissance castle in the Nordic region! Come face-to-face with Denmark’s wildest portrait collection and explore the special exhibition Danner of Denmark. At Frederiksborg, you meet those who helped shape Denmark into the country it is today. Castle, art, nature, and architecture all in one place.

In the opulent Frederiksborg Castle Church, hundreds of coats of arms belonging to knights of Danish orders adorn the walls. The chapel is part of the museum experience, as are the grand Knights‘ Hall and the baroque Audience Hall.

Two additional special exhibitions showcase the museum’s own collections: Rasmus Myrup’s colorful and imaginative legendary creatures meet mythological works from the museum’s halls, while a series of sandstone sculptures of Greco-Roman gods present the recreation of Frederiksborg’s iconic marble gallery.

Experience the museum – daily guided tours all summer!

Especially for children: Mythological creatures await!

Frederiksborg is full of whimsical details waiting to be discovered and explored. During the school summer holidays, children and their families can go on a quest to uncover the myths and legends hidden in the ceilings and sculptures. Keep an eye on the program, which is filled with mythology, and meet figures such as the Mistletoe, Slattenpatten, the Neck, and the Nisse, who are also visiting Frederiksborg.

Get creative! In the inner courtyard, children can create their own gentle or wild creature — inspired by Myrup’s myths — using, for example, branches from the castle gardens. You’ll also often hear the carillon from the church tower and the sound of the roaring Neptune Fountain in the outer courtyard.

Explore on your own! Look for the special Fantastic Frederiksborg for Children signs as you explore the castle on your own. Or choose one of the museum’s audio guides if your children are a bit older. Don’t forget to visit the old wine cellar and the lapidarium, where Greco-Roman gods such as Saturn, devouring his child, await. Museum tickets are valid all day, so take a break in the castle gardens or at the nearby playground during your visit.

Gastronomy

In a former carriage house, you’ll find Rabarbergaarden Slottet — a gourmet restaurant where local ingredients and Danish culinary craftsmanship come together in aesthetic and sustainable dishes. The restaurant brings nature from outside onto your plate, offering a royal feast inspired by the North Zealand kitchen.

We advise you to make a reservation before your visit.

The garden, tranquility, and green sanctuary

Frederiksborg is the largest and most magnificent Renaissance castle in the Nordic region. Surrounded by an impressive park complex with Baroque gardens, landscape gardens, lakes, and canals, Christian IV’s grand castle rises on three islets in idyllic Hillerød. In the castle gardens, both the Baroque Garden and the romantic landscape garden with lakes, streams, and winding paths await — not to mention the miniature castle known as the Bath House Castle. Pack a picnic and enjoy summer in the castle gardens.

And a little beyond…

Frederiksborg lies right in the heart of the castle town of Hillerød. Here, you can take a boat trip on lake Slotssøen with the small ferry M/S Frederiksborg, enjoy an ice cream at the town square, visit cozy cafés, shop locally in the Slotsarkaderne shopping center and pedestrian street, or simply enjoy the view and summer from one of the small bridges along the lake. If you want to meet the locals, take a stroll along the lakeside paths where town residents go about their daily lives.

Frederiksborg is one of several gateways to the Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park. For a truly special experience this summer, we recommend, in connection with the Danner of Denmark exhibition, a visit to Fantasy Island in Præstevangskoven forest, south of Hillerød.
