Myrup's contemporary sculptures of mythological and folklore figures join the permanent collection

Frederiksborg presents a solo exhibition featuring one of Denmark’s most sought-after contemporary artists, Rasmus Myrup (b. 1991). This unique exhibition invites Myrup’s modern interpretations of Nordic mythology and folklore to engage in dialogue with the museum’s historic works.

Myrup’s sculptures breathe life into well-known and lesser-known mythological figures, rooted in Nordic legends and folk tales, and reimagine them in today’s world. These figures take on human form, often crafted from materials found at the myths’ or legends’ places of origin.

In Myrup’s interpretations, the mythical beings gain personality and agency. Building on familiar myths and sagas, he reimagines and reshapes them, allowing the figures to confront contemporary issues of identity, representation, and belonging. These beings become relatable characters with opinions and relationships, bridging the gap between ancient legends and modern life.

Frederiksborg’s paintings, sculptures, ceilings, and furniture are already rich with mythological stories and legendary figures. They draw inspiration from Nordic mythology, Saxo’s chronicles of Danish history, and orally transmitted folk tales. Often, these narratives intertwine with historical events, blending myth and reality—especially in the artistic interpretations showcased at Frederiksborg.

Exhibition Opening for Annual Pass Holders

The exhibition will officially open for annual pass holders on the afternoon of Wednesday, 13 March. Further details will be shared in the museum’s newsletters as the date approaches.

About Rasmus Myrup
Rasmus Myrup (b. 1991, Copenhagen) is a visual artist whose work explores both the fragility and potential of shared understandings. Through depictions of folklore figures, historical wonders, and the explosive power of language, he gives form to the past in tangible, human-scale representations—making it feel new again. With his sculptures, drawings, and paintings, he grapples with how seemingly fixed ideas can, in fact, be highly malleable—capable of manipulation at worst and transformation at best.

Myrup’s recent solo exhibitions include Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen DK (2024/2025); La Criée, Rennes FR (2024); Jack Barrett, New York US (2024); 1646, The Hague NL (2024); Museum Sønderjylland, Tønder DK (2024); and O–Overgaden, Copenhagen DK (2023). His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Arken Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle Münster, and Göteborg International Biennale for Contemporary Art SE (2023).

Myrup is represented by Galleri Nicolai Wallner in Copenhagen and Jack Barrett in New York.
