Splendor Rooms

The Audience Hall

The Audience Hall at Frederiksborg is an impressive Baroque dome hall, reconstructed by Christian V after a fire in 1665. It features original Baroque interior with stucco and woodcarving created by French and Italian artists.

The hall was used for royal audiences during the absolute monarchy and contains a unique lift chair from 1693, which the king could use to hoist himself up. The walls are adorned with portraits, battle paintings, and allegorical motifs depicting Christian V’s family and achievements, as well as the Oldenburg kings from Christian I to Christian V.

The Great Hall

Christian IV’s Ballroom, the magnificent Great Hall, with its size and grandeur, is one of the most overwhelming halls at Frederiksborg Castle. The tapestries, the richly decorated ceiling, and the ceiling frieze have been meticulously recreated based on a painting of the original ceiling, providing a vivid impression of the hall’s appearance before the devastating fire in 1859.

In the Great Hall, paintings of “the father-in-law of Europe,” King Christian IX, his descendants, and relatives, along with portraits of the current royal family, adorn the walls. The hall’s pomp and splendor are accentuated by the impressive trumpeter’s gallery, from which musical ensembles played for dancing, a monumental fireplace, and the captivating chandeliers that cast an enchanting light over the grandeur of the past.

One of Frederiksborg’s captivating grand halls is the Angel Hall, named after the many angels gracefully floating in the ceiling decorations. The hall’s walls are adorned with large historical paintings dramatizing the most significant events of Frederick III’s reign: the harsh Swedish Wars and the landmark introduction of absolute monarchy in 1660.

The ceiling is designed after motifs from the Doge’s Palace in Venice. In the center of the ceiling, hovering above the majestic hall, Frederick III is depicted on the throne, surrounded by allegorical figures representing war and peace.
